Age Verification without the Workarounds

A major shift lands in Australia next week. From 10 December, the amended Online Safety Act will require social media platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent users under 16 from creating or holding accounts. It is the strongest move we have seen on age control in years.

Most of the noise will be about the online side. How platforms enforce it. Whether young people find workarounds. What counts as ‘reasonable steps’.

But the bigger story sits underneath. Australia is moving toward a world where age assurance becomes a normal part of how people access services. And that has real implications for the physical environments we all work in.

At NEO, this is familiar territory. We already work in regulated spaces where age, identity and eligibility matter. Wagering venues. Gaming floors. Licensed retail. Access controlled environments. These places already rely on systems that are reliable, auditable and consistent.

The new online rules confirm the direction of travel. The expectation for stronger age checks is rising. Not just on screens but at the door.

There is also a practical point here. Online enforcement will always be messy. Kids are inventive. They will try new accounts, borrowed IDs and anything else that works. In the physical world the margin for bypassing a check is much smaller. You cannot slip past an entry terminal behind a VPN.

This is why access points matter. Terminals create a controlled moment where you can confirm age and eligibility with very little friction. They work the same way every time. They create an audit trail. They remove the confrontation that comes with manual checks.

We have spent the past year exploring what these new rules might mean for our clients. Part of that work has been building and testing an age verification gateway on a kiosk. It shows how fast and accurate age estimation can be when it is integrated into a simple, familiar flow. It is not a prediction of what the government will require. It is a practical example of how age assurance can work in real life without slowing people down.

For operators, the question for the next year is straightforward. If expectations around age verification keep rising, how do we design entry flows that stay compliant without creating queues or adding pressure to staff?

That is the kind of problem infrastructure is built to solve.

At NEO we’re already helping clients prepare for this shift and we’ll continue to shape solutions that work in practice, not just on paper.
