HMV Leading the Way

Why has HMV been labelled the last man standing among high street entertainment retailers? While others have been going out of business, HMV announced its best ever Christmas ever, with sales up by 3% in the run up to the holiday period. A major reason is that HMV is leading the way in adjusting to the new digital world. And one example of this is their use of kiosks...supplied, of course, by NeoProducts.

The first batch of two new types of kiosks have been installed in several stores - including the new HMV store at the Westfield Shopping Centre in West London. Information Posts are used to search through HMV’s entire catalogue of products and to listen to samples, and Order Points allow the same search but with the opportunity to download music or to buy other products at the kiosk.

NeoProducts designed the new kiosks for HMV with the usual attention to detail, including serviceability and upgradeability. It also used its Framework kiosk software to knit together HMV’s existing web-based systems and a new kiosk interface with relative ease. The Framework allows the kiosk to access HMV’s catalogues of digital content and their order fulfilment systems.

"Bringing the kind of rich content and information that would previously only have been available online into our stores is a key step forward in successfully adapting the offline shopping experience to modern consumer behaviour," says David Elston, ecommerce manager for HMV.
